Fairbanks was founded in 1996 by Steve Jones, with close friend and long-term business partner, Bob Conlin. They recognised the need for a fuel management service that could help forecourt owners identify tank leaks – a major issue that, whilst infrequent, could cripple fuel businesses. With Bob’s background as a forecourt civil engineer and Steve’s previous role as an IT consultant, the duo formulated the idea of using technology to collect wetstock data and analyse the findings. The concept of introducing a Statistical Inventory Reconciliation software system to the UK fuel industry was to form a solid foundation for a business that would become a global success story.
At the turn of the millennium, Fairbanks had gained considerable momentum; new networks continued to sign up to the service and staff numbers swelled. Fairbanks continued to grow with the help of a network of licensees in Spain, Japan, Turkey, Italy, Canada and South Africa, marking the beginning of the company’s global expansion.
In 2012, Shell signed a contract that doubled the size of business in six, short months. In 2016, Fairbanks' global evolution was acknowledged when the company was granted the prestigious Queen’s Award for Enterprise in International Trade. The 22nd year of trading certainly looks bright for Fairbanks; our numbers now exceed 13,000 sites in 36 countries, managed by 200 employees.
The success of the business is testament to the solid management team, who have steered Fairbanks through many uncharted waters, pioneered new practices and developed effective fuel management solutions. Their dedication to the cause has created a very successful and long-standing company.
